Influence of aluminum sulfate on properties and hydration of magnesium potassium phosphate cements

Aluminum sulfate shows a positive effect on preventing efflorescence of magnesium potassium phosphate (MKP) cements. Its influence the MKP cement properties and hydration is explored in this study. Compared to reference (Mg/PO4 molar ratio = 4, w/c 0.25), aluminum retards setting, increases compressive strength, has little short-term volume stability. slows down kinetics, decreases pH values, accelerates depletion KH2PO4, thus mitigates formation efflorescence. It also modifies hydrate assemblage. In addition K-struvite, leads formations arcanite aluminum-containing hydrates such as amorphous phosphate, possibly containing LDH (layered double hydroxide) minyulite-like phases. The MgHPO4 minor amounts bobierrite brucite observed paste, are suppressed presence aluminum.
